  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Adam Fforde -- Wise reflections : Lovely to read a considered and thought-through reflection, not academic, and (so) wise and to be hoped powerful. Good stuff. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brododendron -- Great insights : Barnes centres this book on a few key premises: an individual can elevate themself above any negative stereotype that might apply to their race, religion, colour, sex, sexuality or gender (category), but in the event of any failure they fall back to the level of their negative stereotype. Plenty of anecdotal evidence, personal and public, is given to support this assertion. Elevation beyond the stereotype serves no purpose except to elevate the individual but does nothing for their category as a whole. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Brilliant read : Fascinating insight into how society teaches us to think that creates the foundations of racism that was been taught to us for 100s of years through John Barnes own experiences and insights . This should be read in schools. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Writer Jools -- We should all read this book. : John Barnes offers a different perspective on the root cause of racism. It is intelligently written and profoundly insightful. It encourages people to examine their own attitudes and prejudices, and ultimately offers hope for the future.
